  The reason why employment of disabled people is not actively carried out is a mix of ‘the passive attitude of companies’ and ‘the unsuitable reality conditions for disabled employment.’

  Under current law, companies that do not comply with the mandatory employment rate for disabled people must pay employment burden fees as they fall below the standard. If no disabled person is employed, the burden fee is up to 2,067,40 won per disabled person not employed.

  In line with this, the government also presents support measures for employment assistance for disabled people.

  For employers who exceed the mandatory employment rate and hire disabled people, subsidies of up to 900,000 won are provided, or support for standard workplaces for disabled people is provided up to 1 billion won, among other eight support systems.

  However, in the field, there is a strong atmosphere of not hiring disabled people even if they have to pay money. In Gyeonggi Province alone, the employment burden fee for disabled people that institutions and companies failed to comply with the mandatory employment rate reached 156.4 billion won last year.

  A professional related to disabled employment consulting stated, “In the field, there is a significant lack of awareness that companies should hire disabled people,” and “Even if employment incentives for disabled people are provided and facility costs are covered by the government, companies do not even consider hiring disabled people, which is why the mandatory employment rate is generally low.”
