A developmental disorder characterized by congenitally skewed brain function that makes communication difficult or distracting. Some of these individuals are highly creative and focused, and companies are increasingly hiring them based on their skills and work aptitude. The purpose is to increase the number of “sleeping talents” who have the motivation and ability but have not been able to find employment as expected.
Communication skills < Technical skills
In 2022, Omron Kusatsu Division (Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture), a large electronics company, hired a man with developmental disabilities who exhibits autism as a technical worker. The man, who works as a programmer, is sensitive to ambient sounds and always wears earphones while working.
Although he majored in information science in graduate school and has high programming skills, he was unable to find a job because of his disability, which makes communication difficult. In the midst of this, OMRON’s “Recruitment Project for Multifunctional Talents” was launched in 2021.
It emphasizes “technical skills over communication skills” and de-emphasizes interpersonal skills. Applicants are challenged with tasks in a two- to three-week internship to see if they have the right aptitude for the job. What’s unique about the program is that it doesn’t emphasize pre-interview. “We’re not looking for communication skills,” says a representative.
On the other hand, after placement, the company regularly conducts interviews with in-house specialists and supervisors to hear about workplace concerns.
It may seem extreme, but the goal is to secure talented people with high technical skills in cutting-edge fields in order to overcome the fierce competition in technology development. This man is the first person recruited for the project. He has a conscientious work attitude and is trusted by his coworkers.
A representative from an OMRON group company said, “There are many talented people who are buried in conventional recruitment. When their abilities are matched with the talents that OMRON is looking for, it becomes a powerhouse.”
